Fentanyl Designated as Weapon of Mass Destruction
When hearing the words “weapon of mass destruction”, people tend to think of nuclear weapons and large bombs. However, since December 15th of 2025, that designation also includes fentanyl.
Homeland Security defines weapons of mass destruction as “radiological, chemical, or other devices that are intended to harm a large number of people.” Most importantly, this new designation now allows President Trump and his administration to access allotted funds for detecting and eliminating weapons of mass destruction. It also allows for the Justice Department to further pursue cases, and permits the War Department to take measures to ensure national security.
In an interview with the Washington Times, President Trump stated:
“There’s no doubt that America’s adversaries are trafficking fentanyl into the United States, in part because they want to kill Americans. If this were a war, that would be one of the worst wars.”
President Trump continues to target the flow of fentanyl coming into the United States and is taking the fight directly to the cartels. In doing so, he has made the message clear: America is fighting to protect the safety and security of our communities on all fronts.
