Nebraska Takes Action Against Baby Monitors Produced By Known Chinese Surveillance Firm
Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers filed a lawsuit recently against Lorex, a home security camera company, for the threat its baby monitors pose to households in the Cornhusker State and across the country.
Lorex sells its products at large retail stores such as Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, and Target, but fails to disclose that its technology relies on a Chinese firm named Zhejiang Dahua Technology Co. Dahua is a known Chinese surveillance firm that is legally bound to assist with China’s intelligence system and has been previously sanctioned by the United States over national security and human rights violations.
In the 39-page lawsuit, AG Hilgers claims that while the company markets its cameras as “private by design” and safe for sensitive areas such as children’s bedrooms, it fails to disclose its connection to the CCP.
In an interview with Fox News, Hilgers said, "This is a national issue, and we are leading the fight in Nebraska against these companies who enable the CCP influence and surveillance." Hilgers is not wrong; in the past months, the CCP has been trying to constantly disrupt American livelihoods nationwide.
Nebraska isn’t alone. In August, Florida AG James Uthmeier announced a subpoena of Lorex out of concern over potential foreign spying risks and consumer privacy violations.
The state's concerns over Lorex surveillance capabilities is a reminder of the threat that technology manufactured in China by companies connected to the CCP can pose to the safety and privacy of American households. It is imperative that the U.S. Government takes action to prohibit all illegal products coming from China. From vapes to spy cameras, the American people are at risk.
