Don’t Let China Control America’s Supply Chain: The Case for Autonomous Big Rigs
Nearly 75% of all U.S. freight moves by truck, but our system is stretched thin. Chronic driver shortages, rising costs and supply chain delays are straining businesses and consumers alike. Economist Stephen Moore breaks it down in his recent op-ed in the Washington Examiner, “China is winning the trucking arms race”, laying out a compelling solution: autonomous big rigs can fix America’s freight crisis.
Autonomous trucking isn’t just about technology; it’s imperative to economic and national security. As Moore points out, self-driving freight vehicles can operate nearly around the clock, covering twice the distance of a typical daily run, moving goods faster and more efficiently. This increased capacity means lower costs for shippers and more reliable deliveries for consumers.
While the U.S. has been slow to update outdated regulations, China has moved full speed ahead, deploying autonomous trucks on more than 85% of its national highways and integrating them into the supply chains of major logistics firms. If America falls further behind, it risks becoming dependent on foreign-made vehicles and allowing a global competitor to dominate a crucial part of our supply chain.
CUSP believes that smart, forward-looking policy is essential to reversing this trend. Leveling the playing field for U.S. manufacturers and innovators will strengthen domestic supply chains, lower costs, create tens of thousands of jobs annually and ensure the benefits of autonomous trucking stay in American hands.
As Moore notes, America pioneered autonomous vehicle technology. Now, we must lead in deploying it, to safeguard both the nation’s economy and its security.
